Questions and answers related to cat behavior.

Why does my cat open containers?

Your cat is obviously starving!  Just kidding.

This trick or learned behavior by your cat shows how persistent and smart these felines can be.  Cats are preoccupied almost exclusively with food.  Cats by nature are predatory, they are driven to find food sources.  This need is all consuming.   A cat will not let something as trivial as a lid get between itself and food.  The only cat proof way to keep your cat from opening a container is to put it under lock and key.

Disclaimer: As of this time cats do not know how to use keys…this may change in the future.

Why does my cat stand like a person?

You have a very talented cat!

Your cat is standing on two feet because he has discovered the joys of being taller.  Your cat got tired of being picked on by all the taller cats and decided to do something about being so little.  Now that he has discovered how to stand like a person he has all the best views in the place, he can scope out all the best nap areas, see all the sources of food and can look down on all the cats who picked on him.  We of course encourage your cat to be the bigger cat and stop the cycle of cat on cat bullying.

Enjoy the view!

Why does my cat get stuck in boxes?

Your cat is getting stuck in boxes because he does not like clutter and is trying to help clear the mess.  Your cat is a strong supporter of recycling and helps break boxes down for easy disposal.  We support your cats efforts and believe all cats should be as “green”.

Why does my cat hiss at an evil hand?

Your cat is  very intelligent and can sense evil!  A cat will often hiss when they are scared, annoyed or feel like they are in a vulnerable situation.  Hissing when confronted with an evil hand seems like the most logical response  to us.  We encourage all cats to act the same way when coming face to face with evil!

Why does my cat attack himself in the mirror?

That is one adorable cat!

This behavior is quite common for cats and especially kittens.   Cats are very curious by nature so it should come as no surprise that they would be intrigued by mirrors.  A cat can become fixated on their reflection and try to interact with this “new” cat.  This behavior is normal and should not cause you any alarm , unless of course your cat develops an unhealthy relationship with itself and won’t leave the mirror.

Why does my cat like being friends with my rats?

Cats normally hunt all types of rodents.  A rat is a rodent, and therefore is generally a source of food for cats.  However, in the unusual video below, you will see a cat that is not aggressive toward rats.  You may even argue that the cat enjoys the company of the rats (sort of!).

Why does my cat open doors?

This question has a fairly obvious answer.  Your cat is trying to get to the other side of the door of course.   When you need to leave a room, you use a door so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that your cat is mimicking your actions.

Cats are smarter than people give them credit for.  They can often learn new tricks and behaviors just from watching someone.  If this behavior bothers you you could try installing a lock, changing your door handles to the round knob style, or bribing your cat with large amounts of food.  If that does not work, there is always the option of twenty-four hour cat surveillance .

We recommend constant vigilance when it comes to the front door of your house;  a runaway cat is never a good thing!
